Portfolio management
A development-based biopharmaceutical company, focusing resources on late stage ethical pharmaceutical products across a number of specialist therapeutic fields, required a strategy for management of its portfolio.

PDF Version

The company identified a need to focus resources on core strategic products, with assets relating to non-core products being realised in a way that would deliver maximum value to shareholders and generate additional funding to accelerate the development of strategic products.

The objectives for the client

  • To gain an independent view on its current portfolio supported by expert opinion from specialist physicians, industry executives and the financial community.

  • To establish an independent valuation of key assets to support critical portfolio decisions.

  • To confirm those areas of the portfolio which should remain as 'core' and those non-core areas that could create greater value through divestment.

The programme of work

Bridgehead Consulting:

  • conducted internal meetings with key staff and review of business, development and marketing plans, in order to develop an independent view on the company's product portfolio (current and development)

  • carried out an independent programme of desk research and expert interviews to further validate the view on the commercial potential for key strategic products and technologies

  • created a probability-based Net Present Value (NPV) model for both marketed and development products

  • provided strategic workshops with senior members of the management team using findings to support key portfolio decisions.

The deliverables to the client

  • A comprehensive report addressing the company's stated objectives.

  • A tailor-made probability-based NPV model covering current and key development products.

  • An analysis of the company's key business areas in terms of the effect the following activities would have on value in the short-, medium- and long-term:

    • organic growth i.e. focus & investment

    • strategic partnership

    • divestment

    • acquisition.

  • Recommendations with regard to the immediate action that should, or should not be taken and the focus for communication.

The project achievements

Clear conclusions and recommendations as to short-, medium- and longer-term portfolio strategy, accepted by the company, are now being implemented.

Added value

In addition to providing the client with actionable recommendations with regard to its current portfolio, the project also served to highlight a number of critical weaknesses in the portfolio going forward which are now being addressed through appropriate business development and licensing activity.
