Technology assessment
An academic group from a UK university was seeking to spin-out a company based around novel and proprietary technology for the synthesis of fluorescent ligands for use in diagnostic and high throughput screening assays.

The group commissioned Bridgehead Consulting to provide an independent assessment of the technology and to establish the commercial opportunity within the biotech and pharma sectors. Bridgehead Consulting also advised the group on their future intellectual property strategy and built a development and commercialisation strategy to define the company's future direction.

The objectives for the client

  • To provide the university team with an assessment of the current status of the radio and fluorescent-labelled ligand markets from both the supplier and user perspective.

  • To gain feedback from the market on:

    • fluorescent ligands with the qualities of those under development by the group

    • interest in the ability to carry out screening on single cells

    • interest in access to the expertise available within the group for development of bespoke ligands

    • potential market entry barriers.

The programme of work

The programme of work comprised iterative desk research, internal interviews with the university group and external interviews with high throughput screening and assay development groups within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, covering:

  • a review and analysis of the fluorescent ligand technology of the university group

  • an analysis of the structure, size, trends, factors impacting on the market, key market segments and key players of the labelled ligand market

  • assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of existing and developing competitive technologies, and the level of interest in the company's services and technologies

  • a review of the IP situation.

Bridgehead Consulting then generated a series of business models and held a strategic workshop to discuss the future business and development strategy of the proposed spin-out company.

The deliverables to the client

Bridgehead Consulting delivered a comprehensive report addressing the company's stated objectives. This allowed conclusions to be drawn on the size and nature of the potential opportunity for this fluorescent-labelled ligand technology and the appropriateness of the various business models considered.

The project achievements

  • The client received requests for confidential discussion of its technology from four major pharmaceutical companies, two assay development companies and a major reagent and consumables supplier.

  • The client implemented a comprehensive and focused intellectual property plan.

  • It enabled the client to make clear decisions on the future development route and a business model.

Added value

Through its extensive high-level contacts within large pharmaceutical and biotechnology, Bridgehead Consulting was able to generate interest in the client's technology. This has progressed to confidential discussions with a range of potentially influential collaborator/customer companies.
