Opportunity assessment
A UK University group required an in-depth analysis of a novel medical laser technology, including identification of likely applications of the technology and the market potential of these different applications.

The objectives for the client

 

The group had developed a novel laser technology which had the potential to be used in several different medical applications. The technology transfer group within the University wished to understand which of the application areas would offer the greatest potential in terms of number of patients treated and likely revenue generation. To assist the decision-making process and enable fund-raising for future development work, an independent review of the application areas and market potential was required.

The programme of work

Bridgehead Consulting conducted an initial evaluation of all the potential application areas, which were then scored according to commercial and technical criteria developed in conjunction with the client. The highest scoring areas were reviewed at an interim workshop and the six most promising areas were taken forward for further analysis. Market analysis, in conjunction with expert and commercial partner interviews, was used to identify the top three applications for the laser which offered the highest market potential and likely interest from industrial partners.

 

The deliverables to the client

Bridgehead Consulting delivered a comprehensive report in support of the University group's fund raising efforts, including:

  • Market information on an initial 'long list' of potential application areas.

  • In-depth analysis, including patient numbers and potential revenues, for the top six application areas.

  • Background, commercial attractiveness (including number of patients, potential benefits of the new system, future competitors, IP position and market access/reimbursement situation) and technical attractiveness (including fit with current characteristics and main supply chain issues) for the three most attractive propositions.

 

The project achievements

  • The project allowed the University group to prioritise its research to focus on the areas of highest market potential and commercial fit

  • The independent nature of the work allowed funding for the technology to be applied for.

Added value

  • The group was able to prioritise its research and has obtained funding that will enable it to focus on the areas of application identified as most commercially attractive.

  • Bridgehead facilitated contact with potential industrial partners which will speed up the commercialisation of products based on the laser technology.
