Atacama Labs launches revolutionary
drug delivery technology (PDG Technology) to play a
critical role in pharmaceutical product development, manufacturing
and life-cycle management
London, UK
and Helsinki, Finland - 3rd October 2007
Drug delivery specialist Atacama Labs today
launches its new proprietary drug delivery technology for
licensing worldwide through its commercial partner Bridgehead
International. PDG Technology offers a solution to the
challenges faced by pharmaceutical companies in the development
of solid oral dosage forms by replacing existing development
and manufacturing methods to create significantly faster development
times and improved formulations.
The unique capabilities of pneumatic dry
granulation (PDG Technology) have been demonstrated
in a variety of in-depth evaluation studies with leading pharmaceutical
companies. "We have proven capabilities of our technology
in collaboration with top tier pharmaceutical companies, showing
that in a single day's work with PDG Technology, we
successfully created formulations that clearly met the target
criteria of our clients, whose own efforts over several months
using traditional methods had been less successful,"
said Petri Rahja, Director of Delivery, Atacama Labs.
"Atacama Labs's novel technology and formulation
services can provide significant benefits to both pharmaceutical
and biotech companies. The PDG Technology process can
appreciably reduce the time to market for solid dose forms,
with positive impacts on profitability. We are delighted to
partner with Atacama Labs and are convinced that our unique
mix of commercial, technical and IP experience will help them
maximize the uptake of this product throughout the pharmaceutical
industry," said Dr Fiona Paton of Bridgehead International.
PDG Technology
enables flexible modification of drug load, disintegration
time and tablet hardness. It is suitable for a wide range
of APIs with different physicochemical properties, including
heat labile and moisture sensitive drugs. Very high drug loading
can be achieved, even with 'difficult' APIs and combinations.
Stability and taste masking is excellent. PDG Technology
can also be used in conjunction with other technologies, such
as sustained release, fast release and coating.
Line extensions based
on PDG Technology can extend patent life and brand franchises.
Effective product life cycle management is a critical survival
strategy today, as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies
compete to maintain market share and maximize commercial returns.
